For the past two years I have been really inspired by Dolls. I have been experimenting with different media in hopes of discovering the process that is most enjoyable.
I call this piece "Tasty Treats". The Siamese twin doll eats baby dolls from a bowl. I got the idea when I was searching for shows to enter and came across the heading tasty treats. I did not enter this piece though because inspiration did not hit until the day it was due. The piece has been in the gallery 100th Monkey Studio, in their show entitled, Dolls. 2009.
All the King's Horses and All the King's Men. 2009. This piece was made for a show at Scrap gallery about transformations. The metal core has shed it's original skin and is piecing self back together from bits of new body. While making this piece I discovered that it is really difficult to light a Barbie doll on fire. I named it after a line in the nursery rhyme, "Humpty Dumpty" It is made of 100% recycled materials. I even got the plaster from the goodwill.
Broken. In this piece the faceless doll holds a mask in it's hand and is surrounded by masks. Her chest is open and her heart has fallen to the floor broken. A new heart has hatched from an egg on the floor. Every single mask is different. there are no repeats Considering that there are 65 masks total that was no easy feat. though some do have just different colored lips and one is blank. 2009
Shadow. I made this piece for a fibers show at Sixth Street Gallery, though it was not accepted. It has been shown at 100th Monkey in their Dolls show. The person is crocheted, the background and floor is woven. This piece is also 100% made from recycled material. I cut the woven fabric from old clothes from the Bins (aka goodwill). 2009.
We All Fall Down. I made this piece for the same fibers show at Sixth Street Gallery, it has been shown there and at 100th Monkey Studios in their Dolls show. The crocheted dolls are meant to mimic paper dolls and the material used to crochet gets thinner as the dolls descend. The first doll is made of yarn, the second is made of string, and the third is made of wire. 2009.
This is "Banged up girl" I was in a bicycle accident and broke some ribs, got sixteen stiches to my right temple and a whole lot of road rash. While I was recovering I made a dolly depiction of myself. Below are some details of the doll. When stuffing the doll I included a plastic bag for some crinkle around the broken ribs area, but it does not actually crinkle... it is still there though. 2010.
